The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a set of annals shared by several Old English and Latin manuscripts. The hypothetical first draft is called the common stock, but there are competing theories as to when it was written and what it contained. Source material has been identified for some of its annals, and hypothesized for others based on word choice, geography, and subject matter. Some astronomical annals have also been verified with isotope data and empheris models.
Later annals have been subdivided into the Mercian Register, Abingdon Chronicle, and Northern recension.
